What is an editorial grid system?

An editorial grid system structures pages that carry many kinds of content at once – headlines, standfirsts, body copy, captions, pull quotes and images – so they are consistent across a whole publication. This one divides the A4 page into 18 fields on a 10 pt baseline grid, with 8.5 pt body copy for newspaper and magazine density.

What makes editorial design “Swiss style”?

Design that prioritises structure over decoration. In typography, that means layouts with a precision grid, asymmetric composition, restrained styles and hierarchy created through scale and placement rather than ornament. The approach comes from mid-century Swiss typography – the International Typographic Style – and it still underpins editorial design today.

What is an f-height grid?

An f-height grid complements the baseline grid. It sits at the height of the body copy’s lowercase f on every line, giving the typographer the option of running images, graphics and display typography that align perfectly with the body copy.
